Summer at
Blanket Riverside

Summer is when Munnar opens up in a way no other season does. While the rest of the country faces harsh heat, the high ranges stay cooler, clearer and easier to explore. The views stretch farther, the air feels lighter, and the hills show more detail — from crisp ridge lines to long tea slopes that stay bright in the sun.

At Blanket Riverside, summer is one of the best times to stay by the river, walk to viewpoints, try outdoor activities, and discover the colours and harvests that appear only in this season. Whether it’s guided nature walks, small treks or scenic drives, this is the time when every plan fits comfortably into the day

It’s also one of the easiest seasons for families to travel, with clear routes, flexible day plans and activities that suit all age groups.

Colours
That Appear Only Now

Jacaranda mimosifolia

The Purple Breath of the Hills

Every summer, Munnar begins its season with a quiet transformation. The first sign appears as a haze of violet along the ridges — Jacaranda mimosifolia bursting into bloom. Their petals, thin and luminous, float across the tea gardens like soft brushstrokes. These trees, once brought to the high ranges by early planters, have grown into the landscape so naturally that they feel native to the hills. During March and April, entire stretches of road turn lavender. The sight is impossible to miss: tall trees dressed in purple crowns, tea rows shimmering below, and the sky holding the same shade somewhere between blue and lilac.

Stand beneath one, and you’ll feel like the hills are exhaling colour.

Seasonal Waterfalls — Water Everywhere

Cherry Blossoms

Pink Whispers Along the High Roads

Just when you think the hills can’t get more romantic, summer unveils another surprise — soft pink cherry blossoms glowing against the deep green forests. They bloom quietly in pockets across Munnar, creating pastel corridors along the mountain roads. When the wind moves, the petals drift gently across the asphalt, and the entire valley looks like it’s paused in a moment of spring. It’s delicate. Unexpected. And easily one of the most enchanting sights of the season.

For travellers seeing cherry blossoms without winter snow around them, it feels like discovering a secret chapter of the Western Ghats.

The Monsoon Forest

African Tulip

The Flame That Lights Up the Slopes

Then comes the boldest colour of the season — the fiery red-orange flowers of the African Tulip tree.

Their blooms stand tall between the emerald tea fields, bright as lanterns against the gentle summer light. The petals open like flames, giving Munnar’s green slopes a dramatic contrast you won’t find any other time of the year. In the mornings, when sunlight filters through the trees, these flowers glow so intensely that the hills look touched by fire.

Herping

The combination is unforgettable:
purple that softens, pink that surprises, and red that sets the season alive.

Summer Fruits of
the High Ranges

Jackfruit

Jackfruit

Jackfruit reaches peak availability from March to July, and Munnar’s farms bring several varieties to the market — firm, soft, golden, honey-sweet. Guests often find it interesting how much the flavour changes between types. Many roadside stalls cut fresh jackfruit through the day, and farm visits during this period offer a chance to taste it directly from the source.

Mangoes

Mangoes

Munnar sees a wide range of mangoes in April, May and June. Because of the hill climate, the fruits develop a gentler sweetness and strong aroma. Visitors often comment that these mangoes taste different from the hot-region varieties. The selection can include local small mangoes, fibre-free types, mildly tangy ones and deep-yellow sweet varieties. This range is one of the special food experiences of summer in the hills.

Rambutan

Rambutan

Rambutan is grown across Kerala, and some high-range farms near Munnar harvest early batches depending on their crop cycle. Availability can vary, but when in season, you’ll find fresh, bright red clusters at select farms and local stalls. Guests can visit these farms to see the trees and taste the fruit if it’s available during their stay.

Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit adds a striking visual to the high-range farms. A few growers in the Munnar region cultivate it on structured plots, and the bright pink fruit stands out clearly against the hillside setting. Early harvests appear in certain farms, and when available, guests can see the plants up close and taste the fruit straight from the source — a simple yet memorable part of exploring Munnar’s evolving farm culture.

Spices & Farm Greens of Summer

Pepper vines, cardamom plants and hill vegetables remain active through summer. Their main harvest cycles differ, but the plantations stay lush because Munnar doesn’t face extreme heat. Visitors can see how pepper climbs, how cardamom grows in shade, and how small farm plots produce steady amounts of beans, cucumbers, greens and seasonal vegetables in our own garden.

These appear in our kitchens and are an important part of the high-range food story.
